ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

St John’s   First   School is situated in the heart of the bustling market town of Frome in Somerset . We currently have  over 270 children on roll with two classes in each year group. Our children benefit from a stimulating and enriching curriculum which draws significantly on our local community and church for its inspiration and, increasingly, the wider world.

We are a happy and healthy school, striving to foster a love of learning in our children and to encourage a joy through discovery and in creative expression. We are passionately committed to The Arts and have active links with  Arts organisations throughout the locality.

We have well established systems to support the individual needs of children and a growing reputation for nurturing  children to support their personal development. Our children are confident and take a pride in their school.

Parents value our strong sense of community, the approachability of staff, the wide ranging experiences we offer, and our absolute commitment to working together for the good of each child and family in our care.

                            OUR HISTORY

Our school was built in the 1930s and an extension was added in the 1960s. Originally it was a secondary school, then a primary, and finally, under reorganisation in the 1970s, it became a first school for 4 to 9 year olds within Frome’s three tier system.

Our own school building has large, airy classrooms, a spacious hall, an ICT suite, an outdoor Reception activity area, two playgrounds, an attractive secluded garden and an adventure play area. All classrooms are now equipped with the most recent technology.

St John’s , our Anglican foundation church, is a couple of minutes’ walk away and this enables us to make regular use of the building for worship as well as for teaching through the year.

We benefit from being part of the Frome Community Partnership, a local network of seventeen schools, sharing expertise and working together to address common issues and challenges. Links with our feeder nursery schools are good and, at the age of nine, our children transfer to one of the two Frome middle schools. Both at admission and at transfer we have established systems in place to help children adjust to the next phase of their education.
